The cockatoo squid was our first piece to use sound interactively. It occupied one end of a gallery listening out for sound made by other artworks in the space. It would try an imitate what it heard in a call and response style. You could try and sing with it although it would frequently go off into its own revelries. The sound stimulated chromatophores (or color patches along its body) and other undulations. In a quiet room it would silently slip into the depths.
The cockatoo can be relied on to add audio interest to any gathering. It will happily respond to trained musicians once they know exactly how to get it going.
