Developed with Inspiration Inclusive Theatre and supported by Spare Tyre Theatre Company and Kent County Council Arts Investment Fund. UpStage creates a live, interactive backdrop to complement on-stage action and is easy for everyone to use.

We've always wanted to see how our interactive artworks could be used in a theatrical setting and thanks to support from Kent County Council Arts Investment Fund and a seed commission from Spare Tyre Theatre Company we had the chance to find out.

Background:
Theatre Royal Margate put us in touch with Thanet-based Inspiration Inclusive Theatre and we had the pleasure of working with their Junior and Senior Youth Theatre groups and Adult Theatre Company. Together, over a period of two weeks, we experimented in devising Interactive Backdrops with our Kinect-driven program UpStage. As part of the process, we built a simple hardware interface to cue and manipulate these backdrops. Rachel and Elizabeth, members of the Adult group, helped us test these and then took responsibility for running UpStage live at The Theatre Royal Margate on September 30th as part of Inspiration Inclusive Theatre's 10 year anniversary celebrations. The digital performances included poetry, dance, performance, singing, signing and a small amount of chaos - great fun!

Come and see UpStage in action and our experiments with Inspiration Inclusive Theatre on screen.
