We've always wanted to see how our interactive artworks could be used in a theatrical setting and this project gave us the chance to find out. Thanks to support from Kent Couty Council Arts Investment Fund and a seed commission from Spare Tyre Theatre Company we will be working with local group Inspiration Inclusive Theatre (IIT) this autumn.
The show went brilliantly and was hugely appreciated by the Theatre Royale Margate audience. Our section involved all three IIT groups in dance, poetry and performance. The tech was also cued by two IIT members Elizabeth and Rachel. We're already thinking about how to use the software in the future. There was an amazingly enthusiastic response from the young dancers and also those members who were less mobile but really got stuck into creating body shapes and patterns to fit the piece. Zoe and Peter were great hosts and provided just the right sort of theatrical framework perfect for each group to get involved. Below are a range of images from the performance.
We have made a film of the rehearsals and performance and will be showing this and demoing the software at a sharing of UpStage : exploring new ways to use motion capture in theatrical settings on November 2nd at the New Diorama in London. For more about this event and to book tickets click here.
We met the group's leaders Zoe and Peter and have worked out a series of workshops with kids and adults using a simplified version of our MULTIPLE kinect driven program we're calling Upstage. We want the participants to guide us in designing their own interactive performance environments and then cue these into the program in much the same way that a theatre uses stage lighting presets. Our projection will create a live interactive back drop to the on stage drama. The challenge is to get as much variety and excitement out of the performances as possible; these will involve spoken word, dance, motion and poetry, kids running around and the multiple talents of the company. The workshop routines will be performed live on a special night celebrating 10 years of Inspirations at Theatre Royal Margate on September 30th 2017.
