This summer, experience re-imagined Margate…a playground for creative experimentation, from Mods and Rockers to tidal pool wild swimmers, Provincial Punkers to Dream-makers, the town’s identity is built on subcultures. This summer, Margate Festival revives and celebrates the seaside tribes of summers past and present through a month-long festival, TRIBES. Enjoy an array of artistic performances, exhibitions and events by the seaside as Turner Contemporary, the newly opened pleasure park Dreamland and partners bring together all of Margate’s tribes for a feast of summer activity. From digital games, installations and artist-led invasions, to film screenings, workshops and pop-up performances, come and join the festivities and be a part of the new Margate Tribe.
Our contribution to the festival was an interactive app Become Your Own Tribe which allowed visitors to multiply themselves into a tribe of digital performers. We were lucky to work with Lana Vanzetta at the newly opened art space on the High Street called Margate House. Lana has been building a community around this space for a few months and is was great to see so many people getting involved. Lana also ran a High Street Confidential portrait project alongside ours and the images will be going up in the window over the next few days.
More than 300 people visited Margate House over the weekend
The weekend included a party on Saturday night where we projected some of the performances and photos onto the building from across the street. The projector we used was just about up to the job, and it would be great to do a larger one in the future.
We were really happy with the numbers who attended and the variety of backgrounds – definitely an interesting bunch of people to show for and we are looking forward to future Margate House events.
The event was supported by both the Arts Council and Kent County Council and several of the great organisations of Margate. It was one small part of the month long Tribes festival across the town. It is great being part of such an active and creative place.
